Bio of Samina Faheem Sundas AMV Executive Director
Ms. Samina Faheem Sundas, is the founder and Executive Director of the American Muslim Voice , and Co-founder of Fear To Friendship, a group dedicated to subside the fear after 9/11 by forming life long friendships. She is also founder of the "Global Peace Partners"
Her focus is on community building, forming life long friendships among all Americans and to create a culture of peace, acceptance, mutual respect and harmony She believes that we can achieve that goal through education and interaction.
She is a member of the steering committee for Multifaith Voices For Peace & Justice, Bay Area, Ca, Board Member Friends of Human Relations, Santa Clara, CA, Chair of the peace building committee of the HRC, Santa Clara, CA, Advisory Board member of Peninsula Community Foundation and a founding member of Defense Committee of James Lee Muslim Chaplin. She was also the coordinator of the Muslim Nationwide Hot line, to help people regarding INS Special Registration and to protect civil liberties for all.
She is a board member of the San Jose Peace Center. Samina is also on the Steering Committee for Olive Branch Interfaith Peace Partnership.
For the past four years she has been speaking extensively on immigrant and civil liberties, issues, particularly the USA Patriot Act. She was on the panel of Amnesty International USA National Hearings on Racial Profiling, held in Oakland on September 9, 2003.
Ms Sundas has personally assisted two counties, ten cities and the state of California in passing resolutions against the USA Patriot Act. She is part of the current historical movement working with faith/immigrants right groups to defeat HR 4437 and towards a more humane immigration reform.
She is part of an audiovisual documentary “Tracked in America” produced by the ALCU of Northern California in partnership with the national ACLU that explores more than two centuries of surveillance in America. Included are two hours of audio interviews, 300 photographs and 25 personal stories beginning in 1917. www.trackedinamerica.org.
In 2005 she received an award from The office Human Relations Santa Clara County, CA for her community service. In Sept. 2006, she was sworn in as a commissioner to the Human Relations Commission of Santa Clara County, CA. She was nominated to the commission in appreciation of her dedicated community work.
In February 2007 she received the Clifford I. Uyeda Peace and Humanitarian Award by the Bay Area Day of Remembrance Consortium at the annual commemoration of the World War II internment of Japanese Americans.
In May 2007, Samina was chosen for the Ed Dunn's Social Justice Award of the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights.
In July 2007, she was honored as a recipient of the Jefferson Award, which recognizes "unsung heroes" for community service.
In September 2007 received (the Fellowship of Reconciliation) FOR's Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Prize for her work to bridge the gap between communities and unite all under the umbrella of our common humanity. The award was presented at the third annual Festival of Peace held at FOR’s national headquarters in Upper Nyack, New York.
Samina is a resident of Palo Alto, CA. She is a proud mother of two young adults, Misbah and Saqib.
She has established partnership between American Muslim Voice, Global Peace Partners and Peace Alliance to introduce resolution in support of a cabinet level "Department of Peace and Non Violence" in the local communities.
Global Peace Partners is committed to form global partnerships to create a culture of peace, acceptance, mutual respect and harmony in the world.
American Muslim Voice was established in July 2003 as a grassroots, nonviolent, inclusive, civil, immigrant and human rights organization building alliances and genuine partnerships with like-minded groups and individuals to protect and preserve civil liberties and constitutional rights for ALL. Our goal is to bridge the gap between all communities and unite us all under the umbrella of our common humanity.
